Food safety, being a scientific discipline that describes handling, preparation and storage of food in methods that will prevent foodborne related illness, has hit headlines as a pertinent issue over the last decade in China. The Chinese food processing industry and regulatory system has faced intense international scrutiny following torrents of adulterated foodstuff exports from the year 2005-2007. There have been major concerns regarding the safety of food imported from China which have had significant effects on international business. The issue of food safety in China is a practice that has attracted local and international attention. Food safety in China as a standard subject is based on facts as the events are evidently verifiable. (Thompson and Ying, 2007)

In order to fully comprehend the subject, it is imperative to understand the various government departments charged concerned with food safety, food safety regulations and food safety incidents. The government departments directly affected by food safety concerns include the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Commerce, and State Drug Administration among others. Knowledge of this subject is crucial as it continually sensitizes people on the importance of food safety. (Thompson and Ying, 2007)
