Historical Events

You have surveyed historical events through a number of perspectives: film, poetry, history, ethics. In a documented essay, select a period of history (Vietnam, the U.S. Civil War, the “Beowulf” era of the Anglo-Saxons, or whatever) and present your own hypothetical course unit on that period. What should we read, watch, do, think about? What is the best novel of the Civil War (maybe Killer Angels, maybe Red Badge of Courage), or which photograph of the Civil Rights Movement most deserves recognition? Be an expert broadly and inclusively, and do remember that “history” includes domestic moments, such as have been captured by such movies as The Queen or even documentaries on furniture. One premise here is that there’s no one, single way to get at truth, and another premise is that God bless humans, because we’re nothing if not expressive. Music counts for this topic (what CDs should we think about?), movies, poetry—all of it.
