David Henrey Thoreau’s Walden
Write a 5-6-page paper on any one text read since September 24 (David Henrey Thoreau’s Walden). Select two or three thematically linked passages in that work that seem to you to speak to a central personal, ethical, political, or social issue in your world today, and explain through intensive close reading how reading your author can help you to think through your issue. What are some of the differences in the way the author frames the issue and the ways that you see it framed today (by media, politicians, friends, yourself, etc.)? To what degree are these differences the result of historical distance? And are there surprising resemblances or premonitions of ideas that are still circulating today?
It’s fine to indicate your agreement or disagreement with the author’s position, but the focus should be interpretive and analytical. How is the author developing his or her ideas through images, metaphors, and other stylistic features? What are the tensions or inner conflicts within the author’s own writing?
A quote from one of the passages. “Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.”
