This case focuses on planning and operational issues involving information technology, forecasting, and manufacturing.
Deliverable 1 – Case Analysis
a. Work through readings 2-4. Then, read the four page case.
b. Develop answers to the following questions. Be thorough and clear in your responses (about one page per question with single spaced paragraphs should be sufficient).
1. What’s the problem at North Pole Workshops (NPW)? Is this an information technology headache, a forecasting dilemma, a manufacturing problem, or something else? Explain.
2. Where are the gaps in NPW’s supply chain technologies? What kinds of problems does this situation create?
3. Old Santa seems to be behind the times in terms of e-Commerce. How can NPW use the Internet and demand planning tools to better respond to the changing desires of its customers? Explain.
Deliverable 2 – Case Critique
a. Work through the chapters, readings 5-6. Then, read the three case commentaries from the supply chain experts.
b. Evaluate their recommendations for fixing the NPW dilemma (about one page per question with single spaced paragraphs should be sufficient).
4. Which three of the proposed strategies do you feel will have the greatest impact on future operations and performance of NPW? Why? (Feel free to pick and choose strategies from one or more experts).
5. Some of the experts advocate bringing more activities in house while others recommend additional outsourcing. Which direction do you think NPW should go – more or less outsourcing of IT and manufacturing? Why?
