In Weeks #8 & 9 we will be studying different theories of leadership and motivation. You have the opportunity to choose 3 current business leaders from a list of 10 posted on the assignment Canvas page; and then analyze and compare leadership qualities of each 3 you choose. You will have 2 steps/deadlines for this assignment. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION ON YOUR PAPER (No names or UO ID.) If your paper is not submitted by the deadline, you will receive zero points for this assignment.  Citing in-text, and a list of sources on a Works Cited page are required.
Assignment steps:
1) Original paper (worth 100 points):
a) Research: Search out at least 6 articles and videos (i.e., ~2 sources for each leader) to use as your source materials – you may use more than 6, and a combination of both articles and videos is advised. These should be a mix of primary and secondary sources. For instance, you can find videos of interviews with the leader you are researching, which can be considered “primary sources” and therefore are very valuable! These articles and videos can be sourced from mass media, journal articles, company websites, annual reports, etc. You will lose points for including less than 6 sources, or for including inappropriate sources (such as Wikipedia, blogs, or other “opinion” rather than fact-based sources). You are not permitted to use articles or videos that conduct the analyses you are being asked to conduct in this report – all analyses must be your own personal work.
You must cite your sources in-text, and include a Works Cited page (this is a research paper). I do not require a particular format for your citations.
b) Write the paper: Your paper should be done in no more than 2 pages (maximum), single-spaced with 1” margins and 12-point font.
In writing the paper, you will pick three (3) of the business leaders listed on the assignment Canvas page, read the articles and watch the videos on each that you have found, and then write a comparative leadership analysis of the three. There is a research guide posted on Canvas to aid you in pulling in all the information necessary for this paper. You should answer the following questions:
Use this framework to guide your research – conduct the research first according to these questions, then write up your response leading with your conclusions (Question #2), and supporting with evidence from your research (Question #1).
• Individual Assessment: How would each of these leaders describe the most important elements of their job? How does each leader reflect the issues of the company and the industry? How has this been shaped by his/her experiences? How do each of these individual leaders inspire others in the company to share the same vision and commitment?
• Link to Class: What type of leader would you label each person using the theories from the text? What evidence from the articles or videos support your conclusion?
• Comparison: How do the leaders share/differ on the leadership lessons we have been discussing?
**Note: The best papers integrate the first two individual-based analyses on each leader, with a comparison among all 3 following last. Lead with analytical statements (i.e., connections to course concepts) – then use evidence in articles/videos to support your analytical claims.
Use this research guide to help in your research and writing.
