Engineering Acceptance Essay

Personal statement

Engineering can be described as the art of applying scientific theories to design. In this context, the central principles that are applied to products and structures are important. Therefore by studying mechanical engineering, I have been hoping to learn how engineers apply these principles before integrating them into designs. One of the designs that have inspired me is the Falkirk wheel boat lift as it depicts how solutions to engineering problems can be imaginative and iconic.

My first opportunity to join Guindy College of Engineering, which is affiliated to Anna University, made me develop a deeper interest in pursuing a mechanical engineering course. In lecture halls, we would learn different theories and then put them into practice in the University’s library. A particular interest was in the use of AutoCAD to design and simulate systems, before we could be allowed to carry out actual product fabrication in the workshops. Further, lessons taken in Material science were very effective in enlightening me about the various material choices that can be made while working on a particular project.

It is my sincere hope that a course in Mechanical engineering will enable me to see how various principles are applied in design works.  This concept was reinforced by a lecture I attended on the mechanics of roller coasters. I was amused to learn about some of the constraints in design are applied to blend speed with safety. For instance, when a band becomes too tight, the resultant excessive g-force will cause the riders to blackout.

Despite Mechanical engineering being a promising career, I feel that there is a particular aspect that is always left out to make one fully competent administrative professional. This is the reason why I decided to enroll myself for a Masters Degree in Engineering Business management from Warwick University UK. As an engineer, the course introduced me to important areas of business and commerce such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource practices. An MBA would further reinforce an individual’s ability to think strategically and comprehend the relevance of business and organizations with the intention being to manage change more effectively. In addition, an MBA will enable me to become more confident in the administrative positions I might earn in the near future apart from increasing my career prospects in the same role. In one of lecture hall lessons, I have been able to acquit myself with the idea that an MBA makes my profile more appealing to employers from diverse sectors that range from management consultancy, retail management to social enterprise.

My engagement in sports such as table tennis, badminton, football, and basketball etc. aided me in developing essential skills in teamwork. In these sports, just like in engineering, teamwork is very important as it enables the members to derive the most effective solutions. Moreover, playing has seen me improve significantly in coordinating both my eyes, hands and legs.

Presently, I am working in Petrofac, Sharjah as a Mechanical Engineer since September since 2012. I pride myself in working with the organization as it helps me in boosting my interpersonal skills. As a Mechanical Engineer II working on a live project, I have to constantly interact and consult my seniors or other departmental members from various sectors and nationalities which help in furthering my confidence. In addition, it is a privilege that has enabled be to learn more about health and safety standards while working in a corporate culture.

I am optimistic that my degrees in Mechanical engineering and engineering business management will play a pivotal role in shaping my future professional career. It is my hope that I will be able to progress further into management seamlessly after my completion of the MBA course.
