History

Question one: Using materials from the class, discuss:
a) Discuss how writers disagreed about the effects of capitalism on society and their own ideas about human beings, society and the ideal social and economic situation. Use authors and their writings from your textbook and include Karl Marx, Adam Smith, and at least one other writer (e.g. Andrew Carnegie, Thorsten Veblen). Consider the sharp differences among writers, and their perspective about social justice and the effect of capitalism on society.

b)-Aime Cesaire was born in the French colony of Martinique and had been educated in France in the liberal ideas of the Enlightenment. Yet as you have read in Discourse on Colonialism, published in 1955, he was scathingly critical of Europe and Europeans. Using your knowledge of history, explain the historical context for Cesaire’s essay. (Include liberalism, imperialism, Europe and colonialism to explain.)
