Personal Statement in Petroleum Engineering

From an early age, my parents said that I was overly interested in the sciences; thus making earn numerous accolades for being the best student in my primary school. My parents informed that, unlike other young children of my age who watched cartoons, I was fascinated by watching documentaries that focused on the drilling of oil. I was always marveled at the huge machines drilling the natural resource. Therefore, after I graduate from the university, I would like to be among the young engineers that will foster a cleaner environment by advocating an efficient way in the extraction of oil. In this regard, I know that enrolling for a degree course in chemical engineering is the right step towards fulfilling my dream of working for a top exploration firm.

My interest in the natural sciences was ignited during my studies in high school since I excellent and performed extremely well in the study of physics and chemistry. Furthermore, my chemistry teacher encouraged me so much and advised me to study petroleum engineering at the university level. Additionally, while, in high school, I participated in various symposiums and earned awards for being the most innovative student; thus igniting my passion for furthering my studies at an advanced level. Owing to my exemplary performance in the sciences, I was chosen to become president of the chemistry and physics clubs in high school.

In order to augment my knowledge and skills in the natural sciences, I ventured into the field of petroleum engineering by researching in the area of “fluid flow” that I enjoyed so much. I know that in the oil industry, the issue of fluid flow is exceptionally vital to the process of extracting oil and gas. The research area in fluid flow earned me a six-week placement at a local engineering company where I worked with various experts; thus broadening my knowledge in the field of petroleum engineering.

Most importantly, I have an excellent grounding in maths and sciences and also won numerous prizes for my exemplary performances in chemistry. Besides, I have undertaken  many internship and placement opportunities and attained some experience in the oil industry. During the summer holidays, I worked for two months at the Chenanis oil chemistry refinery, where I was attached to the catalytic refinery unit. My primary tasks were to sort out the various liquids and monitor the oil distillation process

Once I join the university, I would like to study chemical engineering and specialize in petroleum management. The most significant aspect that has rejuvenated my passion for studying petroleum engineering is the books written by Abhijit Dandekar and Kenneth Anderson. These are two of the most renowned scholars of the oil industry, who have published extensively on the issues of fluid flow management, drilling, fluid deposits, and oil and gas management. After reading widely, I have developed an interest in the production and management of petroleum and gas because it is a resource that is widely mismanaged.

Currently, my main areas of interest in the field of petroleum engineering are drilling engineering, especially on offshore and fluids. As part of my crucial courses in the study of chemical engineering, I learned the issues on oil deposit chemistry, which includes the preparation and drilling of fluids under various conditions.

Towards this end, I know that the field of petroleum engineering presents numerous complex and technical challenges that need to be addressed. However, by enrolling in this program, I will attain valuable skills and knowledge to advance my career in petroleum engineering. Besides, I will be able to venture into the field of chemical engineering and help in safeguarding the natural resource that has widely been mismanaged.
