Urban areas place intense pressure on ecosystems. Some of the negative impact can be reduced by cultivating urban forests. These green spaces filter air, water and sunlight, as well as reduce the ‘urban heat island’ effect, provide habitat for wildlife, and increase biodiversity. However, many cities do not set aside enough land for green spaces because of pressure for urban development. You work for a developer and you have been asked to purchase a large parcel of land (currently green space and farmland) north of town. The city intends to extend its northern boundaries over time to occupy this space. How do you suggest they set up this land? (10 marks, don’t forget to include your reasoning) What are some of the environmental and economic benefits of building urban green spaces on large commercial buildings?
