Discussion Board Participation Rubric

Discussion boards are what make an online course a course and not an independent study. They are vital to demonstrating that the learner has met the expected course level outcomes. Collaboration between peers and your instructor in the discussion board is an important aspect of the online learning experience and expected in the course. Any exceptions to the following DB rubric will be at the instructor’s discretion.

The purpose of a discussion board is to stimulate critical thinking in a scholarly manner. Critical thinking consists of synthesis, creating solutions, application to real world situations, and testing, debating, and defending evidence-based solutions. It is not repetition of assigned reading material. Outside research of the literature is a vital part of the discussion board. Posts need to be substantive. This means that "I agree" or "great post" do not meet grading rubric requirements.

Please note: If more than one DB is missed, the student will have to write a 2-3 page paper on the DB topics. If two or more DBs are missed, the course work is considered incomplete until the student writes a 2-3 page paper/per DB, in APA, on each topic showing that he or she has met the course outcomes for no more than two missed DBs.

Quality (50%) of your post(s) will be measured on the following 5 criteria:

1.    All assigned discussion questions (DQs) were answered completely (i.e., all concepts in the DB were included and supported with evidence from the literature).
2.    Posts were on topic (i.e., all concepts in the DB were included and supported with evidence from the literature).
3.    Posts were substantive, addressing key course concepts and demonstrating critical thinking.
4.    Posts met citation requirements outlined below:
•    The initial post for each DB must include a minimum of three peer-reviewed citations, and corresponding references to support each citation. Citations must include outside readings and no more than one be from assigned course readings.
•    The course text may be used only once in all original and reply posts.
•    At least one subsequent post for each DB must include a citation.
5.    While eCollege limits the ability to use APA formatting (e.g., hanging indents), citations must include the required elements of an APA citation.    Score

3.    Your additional reply posts should respond to issues/questions raised by your classmates or instructor.
