Examine the way in which religion has been used to effect changes in public policy and laws in very recent times.   The Civil Rights and Religious Right movements are rarely seen in a similar light, but I think they are both sides of the same coin.  That is, that the deeply held beliefs of people are impossible to separate from politics and that religion can be used as a galvanizing

 

Visit the worldviews held by modernists and fundamentalists.  The differences in these worldviews should be taken into consideration as you examine the rise of the Religious Right and what has become known as the culture wars.

 

You will also watch the documentary, “Of God and Caesar.”  This documentary animates the chapter in Lambert that you will be reading as well.  In addition to discussing the rise of the Religious Right, it also discusses religion in Los Angeles and the role Hispanic evangelicals play in politics.

 

To begin, ask yourselves: What prompted the rise of the Religious Right?  What do those in the movement believe?  Continue to develop your own questions throughout the discussion.
